SIMPLEX 40S 310
This type was introduced in 1958 and was originally referred to as 30HP and later 40HP when the power output increased. It was not called 40S until the new numbering scheme of the mid 1960s.
The 40S was the successor to the 20/28HP type and was based on the same short frame, which was only 5ft 3in (1.91m) long, excluding buffers/couplers.
One drawback of the short is the tight squeeze in the cab.
The 40S was available in weights from 2 to 5 tons with the additional weights being fitted on the ends of the frame. Power is from a water cooled Perkins diesel engine.
This loco came from Severn-Trent Water Authority who used it at Minworth sewage treatment works, Water Orton Lane, Minworth, Sutton Coldfield.
At their request it was built with a half length engine cover, so a second man could be carried to stop traffic at level crossings.
