The Royal Duchy - 47245 - Bristol - Par. 02-06-2013
Following the failure of The Union Of South Africa yesterday at Hereford with a "hot box" and with no other steam loco available at short notice 47245 was the only option left to run the excursion.
Seen here passing Puriton near Bridgwater on its way to Par.
Seen here passing the outskirts of Bridgwater on its way back to Bristol.

I don't usually write much about my photo's but this outing really had it's ups and downs.
Starting off from home I had decided from looking at Google Maps that Pill looked like a good location so that's where I headed off to.
On arrival things were not as I had hoped, the cutting, the line was in was dark and getting a shoot of the trailing loco would have been very difficult. I gave up on Pill and headed back towards Ashton Gate, I had seen a bridge there that might be ok. On arrival the location was not perfect but would be good enough.
Because i was not sure of where the locations were I left home early but now I had nearly three hours to waste! After what seemed like forever and being looked at with some suspicion by cyclists and walkers passing by (What's he upto sat there?) the time of the special arrival was near I walked over to the bridge only to find the sun was now bursting through and I could not really get the side shot I wanted due to overhanging branches, it was too late now.........
The leading shot was ok but the trailing loco had the advantage of having the Clifton Suspension Bridge as a background!
I had looked at other locations for the next shots but as i was unsure about places and time to get between them I decided to go to Avonmouth Station where it was due to stop and reverse, a chance to get some close-up shots I thought.
Now another three hour wait with only the odd DMU to watch. How badly things can go wrong as the arrival time neared a small collection of photographers had gathered and the train came into view we were all ready, the crossing barriers came down and then the train stopped! It was way up the line and then the headlights changed from white to red and everyone realized it was not going to run into the station but reverse from where it was. Everyone thought right let's jump ahead and catch it at the next place, then everyone noticed the crossing gates were still down as the train was still in section and we were trapped unable to get to the next location until the barriers went up. I had been speaking to another guy while we were waiting I think he was called Kevin and as he knew the area I decided to try and follow him as he looked to be off to another location.
"Try to follow" was an understatement, he was off as soon as the barriers went up and I luckily caught the attention of the van driver who was first in the line at the crossing and he let me leave behind Kevin. Trying my best to keep up, and if you have ever tried following someone who does not know you are trying to follow them in a strange place - it's just not that easy. I was keeping up until a junction when two lorries get in between Kevin and me and as I got further and further behind and i could not see Steve anymore I was thinking that the game was up but I kept going - what did I have to lose. As I approached a roundabout ahead I spotted quite a few cars on a bridge and the to my left had side I saw the train stopped!
I reached the bridge where Kevin had already got to and was rewarded with some beautiful skies and the new severn bridge as a backdrop.
The train ran past and then upto the gates of Severnside sidings with lots of chances for photo's so the day was not so bad after all, after that I decided that with the light fading it it having been a very long but enjoyable day I would head for home.
Below are my pictures from the day.................
